Anti-VEGF Injections for Diabetic Retinopathy

Anti-VEGF Injections for Diabetic Retinopathy

HOW DO THEY WORK?
When the anti-VEGF injections are injected into the eye, they bind to the VEGF preventing it from interacting with the endothelial receptor sites. This helps to stop or slow down the extra vessel growth and blood vessel leakage, preventing the progression of diabetic retinopathy.

  • PROTOCOL
The injection is given and the improvement is noted. If there is an improvement in the symptoms supported by a reduction in the swelling in the retina, no additional treatment is needed. If patients have some improvement in the symptoms, it will justify continuing the treatment further with anti-VEGF injections. However, if there is no improvement at all, further treatment may be deemed futile. In this case, alternative treatments may have to be planned to prevent further loss of vision.

  • WHAT TO EXPECT DURING INJECTION
The eye is opened with a speculum. The eye is thoroughly cleaned and then the injection is administered. It is a painless process and one can go home immediately. After the injection drops are given to be instilled into the eyes. One may develop slight redness, soreness, and irritation. Floaters may be seen in the eye.

  • POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS
Infection may occur though it is rare. 1 in every 1000 anti-VEGF injections involves serious complications like infections, cataracts, retinal detachment, and vitreous hemorrhage. A small bleed at the site where the needle was inserted. There may be blurring of vision, pain or redness in the eyes, floaters in the eyes, increased pressure, or increased light sensitivity.

OUTCOME
The results are very promising with nearly 90 % of patients having stabilization of the vision. Anti-VEGF drugs are highly effective in the treatment of diabetic retinopathy.
