What is posterior capsular opacification?

What is posterior capsular opacification?

Let us understand this in more detail. In cataract surgery, a small central round opening is made in the natural lens front surface and all the cataractous material is removed. During surgery, the artificial intraocular lens is placed inside this capsular bag. Rarely a whitish opacity may appear on the back surface of this capsular bag. This is called posterior capsular opacification. This is the growth of the lens epithelial cells back in the bag. This may appear between 3 months to many years after cataract surgery.

Conditions:
This is more likely to happen in children, patients with inflammation of the eyes, and retinitis pigmentosa.

Prevention:
Prevention is the best way to tackle this. Advanced technique of surgery has minimized this complication. Phaco emulsification technique of cataract surgery has reduced this complication to a great extent. More important is the quality of the intraocular lens. A hydrophobic lens prevents the formation of this capsular opacification. On the other hand, hydrophilic lenses very commonly lead to this form of capsular opacification. Hence the patient should choose the intraocular lens wisely. A hydrophobic lens is always preferred. The technique should be phaco emulsification.

Treatment
The treatment for this is YAG laser capsulotomy. In this, with laser, a small opening is made in the posterior capsule. This takes a few seconds and the patient can go home immediately. Drops need to be used after this laser treatment.
