FUCHS CORNEAL DYSTROPHY

FUCHS CORNEAL DYSTROPHY

In this condition, there is a slow diminution of vision of the eyes. This occurs because the pumping action of the cornea or the front circular portion of the eye is not effective. Due to this the water content in the cornea keeps increasing. The endothelium or the back layer of the cornea is unable to prevent overhydration of the cornea. Due to this, there is haziness in the cornea, the cornea swells up and small blisters start occurring in the cornea in the front.

This condition has a predisposition for females and usually, they are elderly above 50 years of age. Most of the cases occur due to genetic predisposition but the risk factors include smoking, taking drugs, diabetes, and hypertension.

The patients commonly complain of difficulty in bright light, glare, and intolerance to bright light. There could also be night blindness, dry eyes, and distortion of vision which cannot be rectified with lenses.

Many patients get benefit from using polarized sunglasses which protect from UV radiation. While working on computers and mobiles use of blue-blocking lenses can greatly help in alleviating the symptoms. One should supplement with vitamins that can have a beneficial effect on the eyes like beta carotene, lutein, zeaxanthin, and trace minerals. It is said that surgery for cataracts in these patients is risky, but most cases are successful if due diligence and care and if appropriate medicines are used while performing cataract surgery.
